Eddie Piller Presents - 'British Mod Sounds Of the 1960s' Box Set

Product Description

  • Includes and exclusive signed print by curator Eddie Piller limited to 750 copies.
  • Demon are proud to release “Eddie Piller Presents British Mod Sounds Of the 1960s”, the follow up the “The Mod Revival”. Featuring 100 original tracks across 4CDs, its a deep dive into the Mod scene in '60s Britain. Including a selection of classic and rare tracks, tracing the scene from its R&B roots to a soulful finale
  • Curated by Acid Jazz Records and Modcast founder Eddie Piller, and featuring new sleeve notes from respected author and broadcaster Paul 'Smiler' Anderson.
  • As Eddie Piller points out in the forward to the extensive sleeve notes that accompany this collection, he chose the word 'Sounds' carefully, reflecting the variety of talent contained here, from uncool session musicians without an ounce of style in them, acts who saw an opportunity to jump on the Mod bandwagon and bands who whole heartedly embraced Mod way of life.
  • And so this new collection mixes the Mod mainstays (Small Faces, The High Numbers, The Action, The Fleur De Lys), with a generous selection of future superstars (David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Marc Bolan, Jeff Beck and Graham Gouldmanof 10cc are all represented here), and a few artists so obscure, so rare, that they never got to release a record in the '60s, but Eddie has tracked down the tapes nonetheless.
  • All formats are stylishly packaged (of course) and include new sleeve notes by Paul 'Smiler' Anderson, author of the best-selling and highly regarded books 'Mods: The New Religion' and 'Mod Art'.
  • "Be in with the In Crowd once more."
  • Every great youth cult deserves a great soundtrack, and when the '60s Mods adopted classic American R&B, with a side order of hip Jazz, they undoubtedly found the right music for their exuberant and stylish way of life. And yet, buying expensive imports, hoping for a local release or praying for a rare visit from overseas talent was never going to be enough to satisfy British youth with a thirst for the latest sounds. Certainly not those on the dancefloor and definitely not those with their own musical ambitions.
  • It was a music scene that began with imitation, before skill and imagination lead curious minds to innovation, a scene that evolved from average (at best) copies of releases on the Chess, Motown and Stax labels, to become something more sophisticated, something quite unique, something very British.

Paul Weller to release 'English Rose' as a single, reports Gigslutz website

The Jam’s classic love song, English Rose, will be the first single from Paul Weller’s hotly anticipated album “An Orchestrated Songbook”. An exquisite reworking, recorded with the hugely talented BBC Symphony Orchestra and award winning arranger Jules Buckley, the track is available from all digital platforms.

This atmospheric and heartfelt interpretation features a stunning vocal performance from Paul accompanied by sumptuous sweeping strings to showcase its sparse beauty, giving it a dazzling new life.

The album features a quintessential selection of Paul’s vast catalogue with classic tracks spanning Paul’s The Jam, Style Council and solos career. It also sees choice cuts from Paul’s last three studio albums, (including his recent No 1 album’s On Sunset and  Fat Pop Volume 1). All tracks are given the most sublime orchestral treatments, with several special guests joining the proceedings; Celeste adds even more elegance to the definitive “Wild Wood”, while fan favourite “Broken Stones” soulfully shimmers with a scene stealing guest duet performance from James Morrison. To top things off, national treasure Boy George joins Paul for a version of The Style Council’s hit single “You’re The Best Thing”.  The album comes to a close with stunning versions of the classic “You Do Something To Me” and the majestic “White Horses” from the album True Meanings.

Alongside the orchestra and Jules Buckley, Paul was also accompanied by long-term collaborator and guitarist Steve Cradock. Jules Buckley, is an esteemed conductor, composer and arranger. He is Creative Artist in Residence with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and has previously collaborated with the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Massive Attack and John Cale, re-creating their music for classical instruments. Asco-founder of the Heritage Orchestra, Jules was also involved in Pete Tong’s No1 house/classical crossover album “Classic House”.

"The latest single by the prolific Notts boys is a Bon Joki cover or an ode to Northern Soul, but more of their trademark powerpop that reminds me of The Truth in places and is more power to their muscles."

"Soulful, guitar-led Modness once again with a great singalong chorus Can't wait for the album."

The Prisoners original line-up reformed on 22nd October for 'one-off' mini-show

The original line-up of The Prisoners reformed to play a short set last night.

It took place at the Billabong in Rochester. Jamie and Allan were playing with Auntie Vegetable. Graham and Johnny were in the audience, so they got up and did a few numbers (including 'Coming Home').

It is reported that they played just 4 songs at the gig which featured Auntie Vegetable, Wilderbeasts, Armitage Shanks & Burntwick Smugglers.

It is said to be a one off, but with the fantastic sound of the footage that has been posted, let's hope we see The Prisoners reform formally for more shows and some new recordings.
