Iconic Swinging Sixties store in Carnaby Street honoured with green plaque

BY YANN TEAR
yann@slpmedia.co.uk
A shop synonymous with the Swinging Sixties – and visited by Nancy Sinatra and Mia Farrow, among others – has unveiled a plaque to mark its place in Carnaby Street folklore.
When the 1960s were in full flow and Swinging London was the place to be, the eyes of the world were all on that famous street – the place where fashion and music met the hip set.
Renowned as a menswear destination, 1966 saw the iconic Lady Jane boutique open at 29 Carnaby Street. Co-owned by Henry Moss and Harry Fox, Lady Jane gave women, and a lot of men too, something to “really shout about.”
Putting live models in the window – changing into different outfits – caused such a stir that traffic literally stopped still as crowds gathered to see this new phenomenon.
People flocked in their droves to Lady Jane from all over the world, including famous customers such as blonde bombshell actress Jayne Mansfield, Nancy Sinatra, Mia Farrow, Martha and the Vandellas, Georgie Fame and Robert Mitchum.
Lady Jane co-owner Henry Moss celebrated his 86th birthday last Wednesday, the day before the new plaque unveiling, which he attended. The old shop is now occupied by Lambretta Clothing.
The Green Plaque is issued by the council. It introduced them in 1991 to commemorate significant cultural landmarks. It was unveiled by Henry Moss and members of the Moss and Fox families.
Mr Moss tells the tale about how they both ended up being arrested, though sadly his former business partner, Harry Fox, is no longer with us.
Mr Moss said: “We put a notice in the window saying ‘live model show’. It went off with such a bang that the street was mobbed with people – you couldn’t walk down it. Even the buses in Oxford Street couldn’t get through because of the traffic.
We did it for three days for an hour at a time, and it made the front page of all the newspapers. I ended up getting arrested and had to go to court in Great Marlborough Street – now called the Courthouse Hotel – where I was fined £2 for obstruction of the highway.
“It was all women’s clothes, but a lot of men came in to buy for their wives and girlfriends, or just to look around,” Mr Moss said. “We even had girls coming in asking if they could just buy a Lady Jane label, and some even wanted to pay us to work at the shop”.
After his arrest, Mr Fox is famously quoted as saying “The publicity is good for London, good for Carnaby Street and good for Lady Jane.”
The clothes were all made in factories around London and once 200 of one item sold out, they moved on to the next.
Fashion moved fast, and Mr Moss and Mr Fox seized on it.
Mini-dresses, hot pants and thigh-skimming mini-skirts were the order of the day, though Mr Moss admitted: “To be honest, we could sell anything. We even had a mini-dress made from a tablecloth which was a big hit.”
Mr Moss and Mr Fox went their separate ways in the late 1960s, though Mr Fox continued to own Lady Jane throughout the 1970s, while also opening Lady Jane Again, Lady Jane’s Birdcage and Sir Harry all in Carnaby Street.
Mr Fox was president of the Carnaby Street Trading Association and it was his idea to install Carnaby Street’s first sign: ‘Carnaby Street Welcomes The World.’
Mr Moss went on to open Pussy Galore at number 5-6 Carnaby Street in 1971, as well as Sweet Fanny Adams at 47a Carnaby Street, selling women’s swimwear.
Councillor Iain Bott, Westminster city council cabinet member for sports, culture and community, said: “Carnaby Street is famous the world over as being at the heart of the Swinging Sixties, so it’s important that we remember the role the Lady Jane boutique played in its history.
“It is great that original founders Henry Moss and the family of the late Harry Fox can unveil a Westminster green plaque recognising Lady Jane’s unique place in our city’s rich cultural history.”

Squire release new album, 'Get Ready To Go!'

Today sees the release of the brand new Squire LP! Get Ready To Go! - The Album. The record contains 14 tracks that will surprise you! And is available immediately on CD and download, and due as a pre order in black or green vinyl and as a special edition cassette.

The 14 tracks capture the sound of the embryonic Squire. Recorded in 1977 -78 and remixed earlier this year, (together with a brand new song - I’m 21) the recordings present a silhouette of the pre 1979 band with numbers that reveal all the pop sensibilities, lyrical twists and driving energy that merged to become the signature sound of the first singles.

The original sessions intended for a fictional band - The Numbers, contributed three songs on the Squire Fan Club Album - We Are The Numbers, Teenage Girl and I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend. However a vast archive of unheard recording remained – until now!

The lyrics impart the adolescent frustrations of the time, while the playing contributes a genuine urgency and ambition to set free! There are many unexpected delights on the way, the angular guitars, the blues harmonica, the surf and Mersey influences, the missing mod excursions, the ska connection, the original Livin’ In The City sung by Anthony. The tracks uncover the diverse influences that fed into the first songwriting steps. It’s all here!!

Corduroy release new album, 'Winky Wagon - Best of the PSY-FI Years'

Corduroy legend holds that having recorded the three 'classic' albums for Acid Jazz Records, our illustrious heroes parted with said company and released a further two albums on a 'major' record label, investigating themes, techniques and technologies previously unexplored; this period of the band’s brave journey became known as the 'psy-fi -years'.
Exhausted, Corduroy disbanded shortly after.

Prophecy foretold that, two decades later, the group would reform and reunite with Acid Jazz; and furthermore that the fabled 'psy-fi' recordings would be compiled by the sister label, Well Suspect Records, into a twelve track, sky-blue-vinyl collection, featuring choice tracks from the major albums, singles and B-sides. This limited edition selection is entitled Winky Wagon.

Experimenting with exotic eastern flavours, easy-soul, yacht-pop, Brit-beats and amped-up funk, the compilation captures Corduroy expanding their signature thematic instrumental palette with melodic, irresistible and beautifully crafted songs, featuring the 'yaught-pop-easy-soul' ear-worm (I Know Where The) Good Times (Have Gone).

London dates include two nights at 100 Club, 27th Dec, & 28th Dec

Small Faces 'Four To The Floor' EP Released by Acid Jazz

NEW EP – Released 25th October 2019
The Small Faces are incredibly important to us here at Acid Jazz. The epitome of mod style, with a love of great American soul music which they made their own, turning out some of the greatest records on God’s green earth. There’s also a personal connection as well with label founder Eddie Piller’s mum Fran being in charge of the original Small Faces fan club. So it is with pure delight and unadorned joy that we are releasing our exclusive EP ‘Four To The Floor’.
In addition to their joyous and timeless songs the group also had a killer line in instrumental brilliance, channelling Booker T & The MGs through the explosive prism of mod and making us all dance. The four finest of these, ‘Grow Your Own’, ‘Almost Grown’, ‘Own Up Time’ and ‘Plum Nellie’ have been gathered together by Tosh Flood (Pugwash, The Divine Comedy) to create this killer EP.
Approved by surviving band member Kenney Jones (who also pens sleeve notes) and put together as part of Rob Caiger’s critically acclaimed Small Faces reissue series, ‘Four To The Floor’ has been mastered by Nick Robbins directly from the original Decca tapes with lacquers cut by Barry Grint at Alchemy Mastering – and sounds astounding!
For this release we have revived our Rare Mod Series so the disc comes in  a laminated flip-back sleeve, resplendent with a Tony Gale photo of the group in their prime 1966 glory. Kenney is available for selected interviews. The EP will be launched at the Modcast Weekender where Eddie Piller will be interviewing Kenney.
