The final instalment - and the second James Taylor Quartet release in the series - is this this version of ‘Mission Impossible’ is pressed on a fitting red vinyl, OUT 19 JANUARY 2024.

The original release track-listing showcases JTQ’s sixties soundtrack odyssey – driving organ instrumentals from the beginnings of Acid Jazz, showing James and the original lineup in their prime. Legendary Paisley Underground Band, RAIN PARADE, To Play London In June

Noted as influences by the likes of My Bloody Valentine, Ride, The Stone Roses, Primal Scream, and The Charlatans, among many others, legendary Paisley Underground group Rain Parade return for the first London headline concert in decades.

Matt Piucci and Steven Roback have been writing songs together since 1981, and are co-founders, along with David Roback, of Rain Parade. Their debut album, Emergency Third Rail Power Trip, released by Enigma Records in the US and Demon Records in the UK in 1983, is internationally recognized as a masterpiece.

The follow up EP, Explosions In The Glass Palace (1984) garnered the same high praise, and its reputation has been increasing ever since. Sid Griffin, author and leader of The Long Ryders has said: “We were in the Paisley Underground with Rain Parade back in the 1980s… Explosions In The Glass Palace is and will forever be the BEST recording from a Paisley Underground band, be it us, The Dream Syndicate, The Bangles, The Three O’Clock or whomever.”

Rain Parade are back with a brand new album Last Rays of a Dying Sun.

The Rifles announce May UK Tour and new album, 'Love Your Neighbour', for 26th April release

It’s been over seven years since The Rifles released their previous record, but now the east Londoners are set to return with their new album ‘Love Your Neighbour’ on April 26th, which they have previewed with the new single ‘The Kids Won’t Stop’. Their previous two albums - ‘Big Life’ and ‘None The Wiser’ - achieved the highest chart positions of their career to date, while their cult-like popularity has continued in the intervening years with countless sold-out London shows at venues including the Roundhouse, O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, O2 Kentish Forum, KOKO, Electric Ballroom and Electric Brixton, and they have also previously headlined Brixton Academy.

The triumphant reaction and electrifying energy of those shows inspired The Rifles as they sent about writing ‘Love Your Neighbour’. It’s a record which bursts with the traits that have inspired such devotion amongst fans: songs as gritty as they are anthemic, and full of lyrics which capture broadly relatable experiences and provide evocative snapshots of modern British life. The overriding message of the album is a plea to embrace the power of your local community.

Vocalist/guitarist Joel Stoker says, “‘Love Your Neighbour is saying we’re all in this big old mess together and it would be good to get along a bit more and enjoy it. Talk to people more, help each other out when you can, say good morning and maybe take your head away from your phone for 5 minutes and appreciate the people standing next to you. I’d like to think that the record captures life's daily situations that we all come across, all wrapped up in 3 minute bundles that you can sing along to.”

That’s an apt decision of the album’s lead single ‘The Kids Won’t Stop’. It starts with Joel reflecting on how life inevitably changes from the first flush of youth and into the demands of adulthood. But then it races into the frenetic melodic rush of its chorus, which contrasts an array of life’s daily annoyances with the kind of soaring, escapist hook which transports you to an altogether more positive state of mind.

Joel adds, “‘The Kids Won’t Stop’ sums up most of our lives at the moment: constantly busy, no time to breathe... but you have to keep going! It still has the high energy Rifles sound, but with a more representative subject matter to our lives at the moment. It is also a good indication of the sound for the album.”

Completed by Lucas Crowther (guitar), Rob Pyne (bass), Grant Marsh (drums) and Deano Mumford (keys), The Rifles have nonetheless had plenty going on since since releasing ‘Big Life’ in 2016: regular headline shows and festivals, Joel’s acclaimed debut solo album ‘The Undertow’, a singles collection, an acoustic album recorded at Abbey Road and a live album from London’s Roundhouse. But the predominant factor has been the demands of their lives outside the band, which has made it hard for them to find an opportunity to all be able to work together.

Yet as their live shows continued to sell-out, often far in advance, The Rifles wanted to repay fans by making a new album. They actually had a record’s worth of material prepared early in 2022, but instead took the time to keep on writing new songs to ensure that ‘Love Your Neighbours’ lived up to its full potential and ensured that the wait was well worth it. They recorded the album at Joel’s home studio in Walthamstow, east London, which allowed them the freedom to work whenever was convenient.

‘Love Your Neighbour’ is now available to pre-order. The band’s own store offers some very limited physical formats, which include a marbled red transparent vinyl with a signed art print and individually signed test pressings. Three retailers also stock exclusive editions: Amazon have a digisleeve CD with a signed insert, Assai offer a blue vinyl, and HMV are selling a sunflower yellow vinyl.

The Rifles debuted some of the songs from ‘Love Your Neighbour’ during last month’s sold-out London show at the Electric Ballroom. Their next gig comes with their annual Christmas jumper party at Lafayette on December 21st, which is already sold-out.

The band have also announced details of a UK headline tour in 2024. Fans who pre-order the new album will receive access to a pre-sale for tour tickets which opens at 9am this Wednesday, November 29th. Remaining tickets will then go on general sale from Friday, December 1st. The dates are:

New Book: 'Small Faces On Track: Every Album, Every Song' out on 28th March 2024

Small Faces. Big Sound. There were but four Small Faces. First they were the sharp little Mod fourpiece of the ‘All Or Nothing’ Decca years, Carnaby Street, Ready Steady Go! and Rave magazine. Then they were the irreverent Freakbeat experimentalists of the Immediate years, with ‘Tin Soldier’, ‘Lazy Sunday’ and classic album Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake. An arc of hits praised, covered and imitated by subsequent Rock musicians such as Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher. When The Small Faces split, they became Humble Pie with Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton, and a different batch of musicians became The Faces with the addition of future Rolling Stone Ron Wood, and vocalist Rod Stewart, to become one of the biggest rock bands of the seventies. When those bands came to a natural end, and with ‘Itchycoo Park’ returned to the Top Ten, The Small Faces reformed for two more albums – ill-advised maybe, or possibly ripe for re-evaluation? The evidence is laid out here. For this is the full story, track-by-track, song-by-song, from the very start, to the final end…

Darron J Connett - 'All That Malarkey' album review

Darron J Connett has had several releases over the last few years (in more than one guise) but one thing you know with his albums is that they will be professionally performed and well produced – and ‘All That Malarkey’ is no exception.

The album starts with L’Inizio, a short and dramatic piece that sounds like the theme track to a movie before continuing with Leave Me Alone, a catchy number with some great guitar playing that would make a good A-side, with a pace change to close the song.

Win Or Lose is another well produced song with some great layers on instrumentation but there’s a more measured build up to Come Tomorrow before it bursts into life for the chorus, returning to a lower level before exploding again.

There’s more of an acoustic feel to the beginning End Of The Day, and some big and dramatic piano notes, which again evokes a film soundtrack. Very enjoyable. Arcadian is a more laid-back number featuring piano that smoulders with it’s ‘Don’t Fade Away’ hook line.

Candescent Smile features Mani Perazzoli of the Buzzcocks touring band. I like this a lot – the verse has the vibe of a Weller track from around his ‘Wild Wood’ period before moving into a lovely descending chorus. Very nice indeed and great guitar work again.

There’s some urgency as Mr Davis kicks in, along with a Kinks’ observational angle, followed by another earworm chorus and more great instrumentation and production values.

A nice percussion intro followed by great upbeat vocal and music ushers in Into The Void with a familiarity that makes you instantly know the song. This is another potential A-side which I am sure would get plenty of radio play.

A much more serious start greets Average Is The New Great, with menacing music the order of the day. There’s a driving beat that carries the song forward.

Album finale, You Know Your Problem, is another energetic and catchy song – upbeat and fun and a great way to end the album. Well almost end it – there is a false ending so if you wait a few seconds there is a bonus extra segment.

We have great new original music with fine musical performances and production here so it’s well worth checking out ‘All That Malarkey’ and giving Darron J Connett your support.

Detour Records release The Mourning After's 'Do Your Thaang (The Weemeenit Sessions)' on CD

Detour Records are stoked to bring you this album which includes the first ever recordings by the band. My love for this band dates back to when I first heard their debut single on the 'Merry Go-Round' label back in 1993. It was an instant appeal as it was full-on, in your face, Organ assault with some mighty crypt-kicking vocals to match.

Then in 1994 we had the pleasure of working with the band and releasing their second single 'Doin' Me In' followed by another three singles over the next few years. Back in 1996 we also enticed the band down to London to support Detour Records flag ship bearers 'The Clique' at the Garage in Islington. Also on the bill that night were 'The Acrylic Tones' who had travelled down from Newcastle-upon-tyne to play and to promote their debut album. All three bands were the top selling acts on Detour Records and the future looked bright. A brilliant night was had and it has stuck in my mind because it was also the night we moved house!

So on that note, I'll pass you over to the main man from the band who will give you the history on these recordings...

After Captain Sensible came to see The Mourning After at The White Horse, Hampstead he was suitably impressed to ask the band to record an LP for his Deltic record label.

In May 1991 they entered Weemeenit Studios, Barnet with Steve Broughton (Edgar Broughton Band) and the Captain at the helm. The following day they left the studio with the recording’s you hold in your hands. The idea was to take these original rough mixes away, have a listen, then get back together for a final mix and choose the 12 tracks for the LP.

Unfortunately due to circumstances out of both the band’s and Captain Sensible’s hand’s this never happened. The master tape was recovered a couple of years later and vocal, backing vocal and guitar tracks were wiped to free up space for overdubs and a release of the LP on Mystic Beat Records (withdrawn ...but that’s another story).

So here are those original rough mixes with live vocals, guitars and extra backing vocals (including a couple with the Captain) for the first time featuring different versions of some tunes that were later re-recorded and released.

'Shake! Sixties Brit Mod Nuggets' - Double LP on Cherry Red

An essential mix of 34 mod favourites and rarities from 1964-1967.

Modernists loved the latest R&B, blues and soul sounds coming from US cities such as Chicago, Memphis and Detroit and when British groups started playing their own interpretations in clubs and dancehalls they gained their own mod followings, their music remaining popular on the mod scene today.

Side 1 of this bespoke collection spotlights the British R&B scene and features a founding father of British blues Alexis Korner with the rare ‘Taboo Man’ alongside ace mod tracks from The Bo Street Runners, The Others, Mickey Finn and The Blue Men (featuring a youthful Jimmy Page on harmonica) and more.

Side 2 starts with British R&B groups developing their own sound by turning up their guitars, employing distortion, feedback and fuzz pedals to take the music in a new direction. Highlights include the Joe Meek produced ‘Crawdaddy Simone’ by The Syndicats (described as proto punk because of its ferocity), The In Crowd’s snarling ‘Things She Says’ and The Artwoods’ fuzz drenched mod favourite ‘I Take What I Want’ featuring future Deep Purple organist Jon Lord on organ. Denny Laine (later of Wings) sings with The Moody Blues calming things down with some soulful beat.

Side 3 focuses on UK soul music – Rod ‘the mod’ Stewart backed by The Brian Auger Trinity takes on Sam Cooke’s ‘Shake’, the godfather of ska Laurel Aitken proves he’s also a natural soul man with his floor filling version of The Mar-Keys’ ‘Last Night’ and the amazing Barry St. John sings the funky ‘Gotta Brand New Man’. Popular club acts Lucas & The Mike Cotton Sound and Carl Douglas & The Big Stampede would regularly bring the house down at mod clubs and also feature.

Side 4 includes mod club dancefloor smashes from The Spencer Davis Group andThe Union (featuring Elmer Gantry) appear on vinyl for the first time.
