Why the Who’s Drummer Invited Fans to Moon Him
A marketing contest for Keith Moon’s solo album Two Sides of the Moon took things to the next level, inviting fans to submit photos of their own “moon.”
The solo debut by the Who drummer arrived in March 1975 with a guest list of more than 60 artists, which helps to explain how MCA Records eventually got stuck with a $200,000 bill for the recording sessions.
John Lennon gave Moon a song, and David Bowie even popped by the studio, although his contributions didn’t make the record. Other guests included Ringo Starr (who suggested the LP's title), Joe Walsh, Rolling Stones saxophonist Bobby Keys, Harry Nilsson, Spencer Davis, surf-guitar legend Dick Dale and many others.
Upon the album’s release, promotion kicked into high gear with one ad urging fans: “Do get caught with your pants down.” Expanding on that idea, the alt-weekly Cleveland Scene invited readers to follow the lead of Moon (who had included a shot of his bare behind in the album insert) and submit a photograph of their own “fleshy buns.”
“We suggest that you use your imagination and paint, glitter or arrange your ‘pumpkin’ in a pleasing fashion,” the paper suggested. “Posteriors must be totally exposed to be considered valid, and judges will not discriminate between male and female.”
Grand prize winner Armin Unger received the entire slate of MCA's releases in 1975. Copies of Two Sides of the Moon were also awarded to 50 other participants. “Hundreds of your moons will be included on a 22x35 colour poster,” the contest promised, adding that each entrant would also receive a copy of the “limited-edition collector’s moon poster.”
The album included covers of some of Moon’s favourite songs - like the Beatles' “In My Life," the Beach Boys' “Don’t Worry Baby” and his own band's “The Kids are Alright" - as well as originals and studio goofs among the drummer and his friends. While Two Sides of the Moon has some curio appeal these days, contemporary reviews for the record were not kind.
“It's hard to imagine the auteur of this alternately vulgar, silly and tender travesty/tour de force as anyone but Keith Moon," wrote Robert Christgau, who gave the album a B grade. "His madness translates not only to film (Stardust, Tommy) but even to the super-solo studio jobs that this parodies so deliciously. I presume they thought it was funny to mix the backup singers (Nilsson, Nelson, Flo & Eddie) up in front of the guy with his name on the cover. And it was.”
Despite the star power, Two Sides of the Moon tanked and plans for a follow-up were quickly shelved. Moon died just a few years later in 1978 at the age of 32.
Telford Mod ensures subculture is alive and kicking for a new generation
A Telford man is doing his bit to ensure the Mod culture is alive and well while raising money for charity in the process.
Johnny Bradley's Mods of Your Generation is hosting live events on its Facebook page to promote the Mod subculture, fundraise and help fans discover new music and art.
Mods Of Your Generation is committed to continuing, reviving, sustaining, and promoting the culture that started in the late 1950s. Johnny does this by hosting gatherings for fans of Mod culture with live music to raise money for charity.
Johnny and his team do this by gathering a community of passionate people and promoting and interviewing the musicians, authors, actors, designers, and creators.
"I pride myself in promoting a cohesive, inclusive community and everything the Mod scene has to offer," said Johnny.
"At Mods Of Your Generation, we believe that there is a sustainable audience not only in the United Kingdom but worldwide that share our passion for the Mod subculture. I want to make sure that mod culture not only remains part of our history but, more importantly, our future."
Johnny started the Mods Of Your Generation platform in 2015 for his expressions and entertainment. To his surprise, many people who identify came on board, and the forum has been growing every day.
In March last year the group organized an event at Cordingley Hall, Donnington, to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Hundreds of mod fans showed up to help raise nearly £1,500.
The event featured 12 hours of live music and DJ, allowing musicians and fans to connect.
Johnny plans to organize more such events to entertain more than 17,000 fans of his Mods of Your Generation Facebook page and raise money to support charities. He also wants to help musicians connect with fans and promote their brands by interviewing artists and reviewing albums.
Johnny will be hosting another live event in Donnington in 2022 and will post updates on social media.
