Detail - the magazine for modernists is a new twice-yearly print magazine covering all things mod-related. The second issue of Detail is due for March / April 2021.
 
This high-quality magazine aims to step away from the digital noise of the internet and offer the reader a carefully curated collection of articles, interviews and insights into modernist culture past and present.
 
There will be regular contributions from some of the most passionate exponents of the mod ethos, including author and DJ Paul 'Smiler' Anderson, poet and writer Jason Disley, author and musician Graham Lentz, author and publisher Jason Brummell, DJ and owner of Acid Jazz Records Eddie Piller and comedian and author Ian Moore.

The Style Councillors announce 2021 Café Bleu UK Tour

 

The Style Councillors celebrate "Café Bleu", the seminal debut album by The Style Council.

 

The Style Councillors are the world's one and only

tribute to The Style Council.

 

Formed in 2013 by Darren Fletcher (Paul Weller) and Steve Hayes (Mick Talbot), The Style Councillors have quickly built a loyal fanbase for the group which was Paul Weller's home for the majority of the 1980's. Dani Clay (Dee C. Lee) and Craig Read (Steve White) are joined by the Bad Manners Horn Section and a stellar line up of musicians hell-bent on recreating the sound of The Style Council.

 

After the dissolution of The Jam in 1982, Paul Weller joined forces with Mick Talbot, formerly of The Merton Parkas, Dexys Midnight Runners, and The Bureau, to form The Style Council. After a string of succesful singles released in 1983 such as Speak Like a Child, Money-Go-Round & Long Hot Summer, The Style Council released their debut album Café Bleu to universal acclaim in 1984. Café Bleu featured favourites such as My Ever Changing Moods, You're The Best Thing, Headstart for Happiness and more.

THE GENTS - The Faker (PICTURE DISC) 7"

Well here it is, the NINTH in the series of these very collectable '79 Classic Mod releases.

Now this release will sell out before it is even back from the pressing plant as the band STILL have a massive fanbase which we have seen with our own eyes at their 2018 re-union gig! So you have been warned!

This debut single release by Doncaster's finest the Gents, it is now 40 years since the original release in the wake of the Gents' triumphant triumph in the EMI Joshua Tetley Supergroup competition.

Having won equipment, recording time at Abbey Road and a one-single deal, the band preferred to take their time and do the single themselves back up north and this is the product, the double A-sided The Faker and cunningly punned Le Pink Pantser.

The single was originally pressed as 1000 and these sold out at gigs in record time and although they do come up on eBay about once a year or 18 months or so, they are renowned for selling for between fifty and a hundred quid.  One of the rare Gents' items. All artwork by Mr. Simon Curtis.

REVIEW: Coloride - 'Nothing Is Everything' album (Heavy Soul!)

 

The album kicks off with 'Storyboard' which is energetic and catchy and would make a great A-side to a single, demonstrating that Coloride are the lost child of the Britpop era. This is followed by 'Waiting For My Friend' that builds up nicely from a great opening bass riff and contains a lovely guitar riff and break which has a slight Indian vibe to it. Another good track follows in 'Living Legend' and I particularly liked the middle break down and resulting build up again - I could see them playing this to a big crowd at a festival.

'My Life' had a bit of a feel of The Who at the start, which is no bad thing, and the recording makes great use of additional organ. I also liked the stop-start ending. This is followed by 'Mrs Glossop' which has a really nice chord progression and a structure that drops right down before building up the atmosphere once again. A very catchy number - 'My Life Means Nothing'. 'Shine', with its acoustic start, is more medium paced, but subsequently ramps up with overdriven guitars and an irreverent vocal delivery. Pounding drums drive the song on along with backing vocals that cleverly echo the riff. Britpop Glam at its finest. And when the song slows down again there is a very Townshend-esque lead guitar part. Nice.

'Lady Jane' is organ led and has a very catchy riff. The organ break is superb too - love it. Next up is 'Dear D' with its acoustic picking start - slow paced but so atmospheric, with rimshots and bass coming in and a great vocal performance making you hang on every word. 'Hitchin Song' has a riff and chord progression at the start with a sound that at times that is reminiscent of how The Beatles sounded around 1967/68 (other than the guitar). The song is built on a descending run with a nice break down to bass in the middle. This is a very good song.

'Wishing' starts with a lovely bass run and builds up into a very catchy number with really good backing vocals. The album ends with 'Hold On', the song beginning with a damped guitar riff that builds through wah-wah guitar and punchy drums. This song has a real Stone Roses vibe and the riffing continues on and on - terrific.

'Nothing Is Everything' is a really accomplished album, although it has taken a few years for Coloride to finally get it recorded and released (on the excellent Heavy Soul! Records) - but it has been worth the wait. If you like Britpop (These Animal Men etc.), great songs and really good musicianship, then get yourself over to the Heavy Soul! REVIEW: The Electric Stars - 'Velvet Elvis: The Only Lover Left Alive'

 

I have just received the long-awaited new album through by The Electric Stars - 'Velvet Elvis: The Only Lover Left Alive', and straight onto the CD player it goes.

The title track is first up and starts with some very atmospheric music, almost something that you would hear on a film score. It then starts properly and demonstrates a huge depth and quality to this band. From singing, to musicianship, to song-writing to recording and production skills, this is absolutely top drawer. This is original music by a proper band - it feels like they are throwing down the gauntlet to other bands out there to challenge them to compete with The Electric Stars if they can. "I've Got a Soul, I've Got a Voice". The opening track is over 9-minutes long, but certainly doesn't feel like it.

'Electric Stardust' is a fabulous groover which, in a couple of places, brought a Jetset vibe into my head for some reason (which is never a bad thing). 'Sunshine' is very catchy and would make a great A-side. This is followed by 'Pop Star' which is another groover and, again, very catchy. 'Suicide' is more mid-paced and intense, as you would expect from such subject matter, but another good song nonetheless.

'Everything Everyone' has something of the latter day Beatles about it - mid paced, but fab and groovy. 'Precious' (no, not that one) is yet another instant number and then 'The Only Lover Left Alive' takes us even higher - another great song, another potential A-side, it really wigs out and has a real eastern vibe to it. Wonderful.

'Loaded With Regrets' is a slower and more acoustic number, but has great depth and passion to it. At about 4 minutes and 30 seconds it goes electric for the final 45 seconds. 'I Left My Soul Out In The Rain' is another mid-paced number of quality, with Jason singing, "There's a monster in my head, It's gonna haunt me till I'm Dead". And a great 'Velvet Elvis' singalong at the end too.

'We Love You' (no, not that one) comes in with a great guitar riff and tears the place apart. It thunders on to great effect. Love it. It then slows down at the end, adding power to proceedings. The album finished with 'Impossible Odds (Rock n Roll Saved Me)' which starts with a piano backing Jason's voice and builds up from there. Very atmospheric, and very, very good. I've said it before in this review, but I will say it again - the quality shines through.

And with a 16-page booklet designed by Rik Bardsley and Jason, with Rik providing the booklet photographs (with a CD back cover photo by Derek D'Souza from the 100 Club), plus an autographed postcard, this is a beautifully produced package. And with over 62 minutes of music, you certainly get value for money.

Remember, this review is only based on one hearing only and I already think it is superb. How much do you think I will like it after several plays? This really is beautiful music for beautiful people.
