Terry Hall of The Specials dies aged 63

Terry Hall, the frontman of socially conscious ska band The Specials, has died at the age of 63.

Known for his dour image and sharp wit, the singer found fame in the 1970s and 80s with hits like Ghost Town, Gangsters and Too Much Too Young.

He left The Specials in 1981 to form Fun Boy Three with fellow-bandmates Neville Staple and Lynval Golding, scoring another run of hits.

The singer died after a brief illness, The Specials said in a statement.

"Terry was a wonderful husband and father and one of the kindest, funniest, and most genuine of souls," they wrote.

"His music and his performances encapsulated the very essence of life… the joy, the pain, the humour, the fight for justice, but mostly the love.

"He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him and leaves behind the gift of his remarkable music and profound humanity."

In a separate message, Staple told the BBC he had learned of his friend's passing as he landed in Egypt for a holiday with his wife.

"It's really hit me hard," he said. "We fronted The Specials and Fun Boy Three together, making history.

"Terry, he surely will be missed."

Jane Wiedlin, co-founder of band The Go Gos who co-wrote the band's hit Our Lips Are Sealed with Hall, said he was a "lovely, sensitive, talented and unique person".

"Our extremely brief romance resulted in the song Our Lips Are Sealed, which will forever tie us together in music history."

Singer Elvis Costello described Hall's voice as "the perfect instrument for the true and necessary songs on The Specials".

"That honesty is heard in so many of his songs in joy and sorrow," he said.

The band asked for respect for Hall's family's privacy. No cause of death was shared.

These Animal Men / S*M*A*S*H: New Wave Of New Wave (6CD)

Charting the rise & fall of the scene that lit the blue touchpaper for the Britpop explosion!

Including sleevenotes by Paul Moody

Archival photos & rare recordings

6CD box set

BRITAIN in 1993 now seems like another time, another place. Paralysed into a state of torpor by 14 years of Tory government and cowed by England's failure to qualify for the World Cup, the national mood was one of escapism.

Pop music was also short-circuiting, the charts full of manufactured boy bands (Take That, East 17), inane electro-pop (2 Unlimited's'No Limits', Culture Beat's 'Mr Vain') and novelty records (Mr Blobby). The independent sector, too, was entering its darkest hour. With Seattle’s nihilistic grunge scene —headed by Nirvana — championed as the cure for rock’s ills. This lack of self-belief was reflected in a cover story in rock bible NME on 30th October 1993 titled “21st Century Joy”, which suggested that the music scene in 2003 would be entirely electronic.

Within a month, however, it was obvious to keen observers that a new sound and attitude was emerging from Britain’s satellite towns like the proverbial bat out of hell. At the inaugural ‘In The City’ event in Manchester in November 1993 — a music industry showcase organised by Factory Records boss Tony Wilson — a crop of spiky young bands shared a radical, back-to-basics approach. Two in particular stood out — S*M*A*S*H and These Animal Men. Angry, articulate and caustically tuneful, both bands would — over the course of 18 glorious months — light up the British music scene as spectacularly as a distress flare.

Backed by electrifying live performances both bands would go to be heralded by the NME in January 1994 as part of the ‘New Wave Of New Wave’. Both signing record deals with Virgin off-shoot Hi-Rise Recordings, the bands would go onto to releases a string of EPs such as You’re Not My Babylon, Spring 1994, Too Sussed? & I Want To Kill Somebody. Before debut albumsSelf-Abused and (Come On, Join) The High Society came out to respectable chart positions of 59 and 62.

However, with both Blur and Oasis enjoying unprecedented chart success — Oasis’ Definitely Maybe, released in August 1994, sold 100,000 in four days — both were seen as disappointing. Internal divisions, too, were pushing both bands to breaking point. SMASH imploded and TAM would go onto release the criminally overlooked second album Accident & Emergency.

This unique 6CD collection brings together both bands output from this short lived scene. All of the EPs and albums are here and ordered chronologically to give the listener the best possible perspective of the how the scene unfolded.

Accompanying the 6CDs is a 32 page booklet featuring former NME journalist Paul Moody’s (the man responsible for coining the phrase the New Wave of New Wave) in-depth essay depicting the rise and fall of the scene, along with interviews with members of both bands. The booklet also includes previously unseen photos by photographers Martyn Goodacre and Andy Wilshere and short essay’s from both Ed Borrie(S*M*A*S*H) and members of These Animal Men.

As the music and photographs compiled here illustrate, the look and sound of both bands remains timeless. Turn up the volume. S*M*A*S*H and These Animal Men will see you in the speakers.

The Who Are Headlining This Christmas Carol Concert In Chelsea

Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend from The Who will headline a charity carol concert this December, raising money for music therapy charity, Nordoff Robbins.

The greenfingered Brexiter frontman and no-longer-tends-to-smash-up-his-guitar guitarist will perform at St Luke's Church in Chelsea on Tuesday 13 December, although don't hold out for a deafening axe solo mid-Bleak Midwinter — this'll be an acoustic performance.

If you're wondering if The Who ever did a Christmas song themselves, yes they did — it appears on the 1969 album Tommy, and is called... Christmas.

While the two Who legends are headlining, the Nordoff Robbins Carol Service promises a lineup of various  celebrity readings, peppered in-between traditional Christmas carols. There'll also be mulled wine and mince pies.

The Nordoff Robbins Carol Service, St Luke's Church, Chelsea, 13 December, tickets £55+booking

Eddie Piller Presents British Mod Sounds of The 1960s Volume 2: The Freakbeat & Psych Years

Curated by Acid Jazz Records and Modcast founder Eddie Piller, “British Mod Sounds of The 1960s Volume 2: The Freakbeat & Psych Years” is the follow up to the hugely successful “British Mod Sounds of The 1960s”, featuring 95 original tracks across a 4CD set - a deep dive into the post-Mod scene in '60s Britain. Featuring a selection of classic and rare tracks, tracing the scene from early '65 to the dawn of a new decade.

Even before Demon's well received 2022 box set 'British Mod Sounds of The 1960s' was released conversations were being had around a follow-up, though rather than just offering a straight if slightly diluted second volume, compiler Eddie Piller decided to put together a collection exploring "What the Mods did next". Once again, long conversations (and the occasional heated debate) were had to ensure the quality of music and attention to detail were second to none. Anything less just wouldn't be the Mod way.

The British Mod bands that had made the first half of the decade so exciting were still around but inevitably their influences had changed. No longer content with re-hashing American R&B, the scene split in multiple directions, not all of it forward looking - some hardened their up-tempo sound and gradually evolved into what we would come to know as Freakbeat. Others bought in psychedelic, esoteric or Eastern influences. A third strand explored a more pastoral or Folk based route. Simply put, songs and hair got longer.

Before the decade was out the choices for the discerning listener included Jazz-Rock, Proto-Prog, Whimsy, Heavy Rock, and Psychedelic Soul - even sounds derived from Cockney music-hall made an appearance.

'Volume 2: The Freakbeat & Psych Years' tracks the development of the original Mod mainstays (the Small Faces, The Who, The Action, The Kinks), with a generous selection of future superstars (David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Fleetwood Mac, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and Steve Howe of Yes are all represented here), alongside a few artists so obscure, so rare, that they never got to release a record in the '60s, but Eddie has tracked down the tapes nonetheless.

Stylishly packaged (of course) and including a new sleeve note by Richard Norris, author, musician, producer and DJ, who worked at pioneering psychedelic reissue label Bam Caruso in the '80s, produced Joe Strummer's Mescaleros, but is perhaps best known as one half of Techno duo The Grid and the critically acclaimed group Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve.

Billy Sullivan (ex-Spitfires) to release 'Paper Dreams' album on 10 March

We’re pleased to announce that Billy Sullivan’s solo debut album ‘Paper Dreams’ will be released 10th March 2023 on Kickstart Recordings. Including singles ‘Overcome’, ‘I Will Follow’ and the blistering ‘Running Out Of Time’.

Recorded over just three days in Coastal Sound recording studios in Liverpool, ‘Paper Dreams’ is Sullivan’s first collection of songs since the demise of former band The Spitfires.

“I can only really compare each album to the previous one” Sullivan says regarding the new album. “The last Spitfires record ‘Play For Today’ was so thought out. From the sound concept to the subject matters of the lyrics. Every tiny detail was planned and poured over and then of course debated. However ‘Paper Dreams’ was completely natural - a collection of songs that me and Simon Dine just wrote for fun without it being an album or us particularly working towards anything at first."

The Selecter to release 'Celebrate The Bullet' Deluxe Edition Box Set on 11 November

Product description

The Selecters's second album, Celebrate The Bullet was released in February 1981 as the follow up to the successful 2 Tone debut album Too Much Pressure, along with the hit singles On My Radio, Three Minute Hero and Missing Words.

Switching labels to Chrysalis Records, the band returned to On My Radio producer Roger Lomas, moving into a more melodic slower pace, whilst keeping their lyrical commentary on racial and social issues. Original members Desmond Brown and Charley Anderson departed before the recording began, with Lomas and Norman Watt-Ray (Ian Dury) helping on bass before new members James Mackie and Adam Williams joined to complete the recording.

Due to unfortunate timing, upon release the title of this album was misunderstood due to the recent murder of John Lennon and an assassination attempt on U.S. President Ronald Regan meant radio stations didn't support the single or album and the release was largely ignored.

This forgotten classic from the 2 Tone era is a timely reissue and will give time for a re-evaluation in the same way the 2021's reissue of too Much Pressure showed the band as relevant.

Pauline Black, who was recently awarded an OBE in 2022, and the band will be touring in November 2022 and into 2023 performing the album in full along with selections of their previous album.

Format: a 3CD deluxe clamshell box set with 20 page booklet featring bands notes. Remastered by Alchemy Mastering At AIR from the original production tapes.

Foxton & Hastings new album, 'The Butterfly Effect', out now!

Product description

Bruce Foxton and Russell Hastings team up once again to release their third album together 'The Butterfly Effect'. Serving as the lead single from the album, the addictive 'Lula' is described by Hastings as 'A catchy pop song about a spoilt woman who seemingly has everything yet has nothing'. This standout track succeeds in capturing a summer vibe, thanks in part to a blistering saxophone solo from Tony 'Rico' Richardson. This vigour is apparent also on 'Two Of Us', which Hastings labels 'a nod to Quadrophenia'. The 'sha-la-la' repeats and loud, ringing guitars instantly takes you back to a time of mods vs rockers and heady sunny days in Brighton. The duo both name The Beatles as a huge influence on their work - no more is this apparent on the lively closing track 'Anything You Want' with its bouncy rhythm and psychedelic ending. Recording the vocals for this track unknowingly with covid, Hastings' voice nevertheless shines and brings the album to a rousing end.
