Paul Weller helps raise £8,000 for Woking hospice
Lovers of The Jam turned out for a night dedicated to the Woking band
The sounds of The Jam rocked the room at a gig which raised more than £8,000 for Woking and Sam Beare Hospice and Wellbeing Care. The gig took place at the Fiery Bird live music venue in Woking, which is just 50 yards away from where The Jam played 50 years ago.
Organised by hospice supporter Sam Molnar, guests listened to Steve 'Tufty' Carver as he recounted tales of The Jam, who he says were the best band in the world. Steve was interviewed on stage by Dan Jennings, the host of the Paul Weller Fan Podcast series.
Cian Downing, a singer, songwriter and guitarist, played a brilliant set list featuring his own songs and some covers while The Jam’d, the headliners for the night, got the crowds going with all The Jam hits. Their set on Saturday, March 22 also included a touching tribute to The Jam’s Rick Buckler, who died in February.
Samantha Wakefield, the hospice’s marketing manager and her team made up of Lucy Smith, Anji Molnar and Sandie Robertson, had been busy behind the scenes organising the event, running two raffles and an auction to add to the funds raised for the hospice. A guitar signed by Paul Weller and decorated with artwork by Simon Clements reached in an impressive £750 in the auction.
Sam said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported the gig. If they came along, bought a raffle ticket or donated a prize, it all counts.
"I’m very grateful to Warren Macfarlane from D.R.C. Shipping for sponsoring the night and to Steve Wheatley from This is Now design for designing the merchandise. Thanks to the Fiery Bird staff for making sure the evening ran smoothly and to the hospice staff for spreading the word about the hospice’s work.
“There was a lot of love in the room on Saturday and it just shows what the hospice means to the town. We are lucky that they support so many families across the area.”
Brighton Museum & Art Gallery celebrates iconic 1960s Mod style with new fashion exhibition this summer. Reported by Laura Pauley
Brighton Museum & Art Gallery is set to turn back the clock to one of the most stylish and revolutionary eras in British culture with its new exhibition, The In Crowd: Mod Fashion & Style 1958-66.
Opening on 10 May 2025 and running until 4 January 2026, this highly anticipated showcase, sponsored by original Brighton Mod brand Ben Sherman, will bring to life the bold style, youthful rebellion, and cultural impact that defined a generation.
The exhibition will feature over 35 dressed mannequins showcasing rare and early Mod outfits drawn from the renowned collection of Roger K. Burton, an expert in vintage fashion. The one-of-a-kind pieces will give visitors an up-close look at the revolutionary style that challenged the norms of the time.
With over 50 years of experience, curator Roger K Burton has styled films including Quadrophenia and Absolute Beginners and worked with cultural icons such as David Bowie, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
Burton has crafted an exhibition that goes beyond clothing. "The In Crowd: Mod Fashion & Style 1958-66 isn’t just about the clothes; it’s about capturing the restless spirit of a generation," Burton explains.
"Emerging in post-war Britain, the Mods rejected the 1950s, favouring sharp tailoring, bold colours, and a sense of modernity that captured the spirit of youth culture. More than just a fashion statement, they embraced a fresh outlook on life, celebrating youth, freedom, and modernity in ways that continue to inspire today."
The exhibition showcases the influential designers who defined the Mod movement with sleek miniskirts, sharp suits, and crisp button-down shirts that embodied its forward-thinking spirit. “These garments were statements of individuality, rebellion, and modernity,” says Burton.
“This exhibition not only showcases the remarkable craftsmanship and innovation of Mod fashion but also celebrates Brighton's unique historical connection to this influential youth movement. Brighton & Hove Museums provides the perfect setting, offering visitors an inspiring opportunity to explore the cultural and stylistic legacy that continues to resonate across generations.”
Hedley says visitors can expect more than just fashion on display. “As visitors walk through the gallery, they’ll be immersed in the fashion of the Mod era. The exhibition tells the story of how the Mod look evolved, its impact on the fashion world of the 1960s, and its relationship with clubs and global music. Through contemporary clothing, accessories and photography, we will transport audiences back to the Mod era. The exhibition will highlight the sharp, cool fashion fuelling this cultural revolution.”
Sponsoring The In Crowd: Mod Fashion & Style 1958-66, Ben Sherman reaffirms its legacy as a brand synonymous with Mod culture. The new Brighton flagship store will also feature a striking window display in May that pays homage to the exhibition, reinforcing the connection between the brand, the city, and the Mod movement.
While the Mod era had faded by the late 1960s, its legacy lived on. Mods crafted a distinctly British lifestyle in its sharpness and sophistication, yet boldly modern in its perspective. Their influence extended far beyond Britain, shaping fashion around the world.
"The Mods created a lifestyle,” says Burton. “It was a cultural movement that remained relevant for generations. What started as a youthful rebellion in post-war Britain became a global phenomenon. This exhibition will show how that spirit still influences fashion today."
The exhibition is a must-see for those curious about the Mod movement. It’s a chance to step into the world of a transformative youth culture that left an indelible mark on fashion and society. Whether you lived through the era or are discovering it for the first time, The In Crowd: Mod Fashion & Style 1958-66 promises an immersive and captivating experience.
Step into a world of sharp suits and the unrelenting energy of youth at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery. The exhibition will run from 10 May 2025 to 4 January 2026. Don’t miss your chance to explore the Mod style that changed the fashion world.

Detour Records re-issue THE THREADS' 'Step Back In Time' anthology CD 25-years after original release
25-years ago, Detour Records collected together virtually all of the recorded output that had been released by Lincolnshire Mod band, The Threads (established in 1982), and mastered it into the 22-track anthology CD collection, ‘Step Back In Time’. This captured the band’s very first demo tape, ‘Mind The Threads, John!’, that sold over 100 copies at the first Mod Aid Alldayer in Walthamstow in December 1985 alone (going on to sell 500 copies). The Threads then recorded ‘Step Back’ and ‘Alison’, with Producer Ed Ball (The Times/TV Personalities) for the first Phase III EP in May 1986 before completing their ‘As Yet Untitled’ LP for Unicorn that was released in 1987. These recordings, along with tracks recorded for various compilations, flexi discs or records that never saw the light of day at the time, made up this anthology CD, which quickly sold out on release in 2000. Back in the day, The Threads also made prominent ‘live appearances at the Lincoln Mod Rally (1985), Mansfield Athenians Alldayer (1985), Purple Hearts Come-Back Allnighter in Peterborough (1986), the Lowestoft Easter Mod Rally (1986) and the 1987 National Mod Meeting in Lincoln (as well as playing across Europe too).
In the interim, The Threads have appeared on two prominent Cherry Red box sets: ‘Millions Like Us (The Story Of The Mod Revival 1977-1989)’ & ‘Into Tomorrow: The Spirit Of Mod 1983-2000’ as well as having a double ‘live’ LP, ‘At The Height Of The Season’, and triple rarities LP, ‘A Teenage Dream’, released on Germany’s Time For Action Records, showing the continued interest in the band.
Over the years since, the band members have been constantly asked about when the ‘Step Back In Time’ anthology will be released in hard format again. Now we can announce that 25-years later this is finally happening, with Detour’s limited-edition run of just 200 copies in a budget format (card sleeve instead of the old jewel case and booklet) to keep the price down and get the music back out their again. But not only can you hear the recordings in hard format again, you will also be able to sing along with the songs ‘live’ with The Threads already confirmed to appear at London’s Mods Mayday Alldayer 2025 (Sunday 4th May), a special free admission ‘homecoming’ show at The Courthouse in Skegness, Lincolnshire, on Saturday 17th May, and the performance of two sets at The Cavern in Liverpool on Sunday 25th May as part of the IPO Festival (with more dates to be confirmed and announced shortly).

Proper formed in London, England in March 2015 with the aim of producing timeless 3 minute pop songs, with a nod to the past pop masters of the mid ’60’s and the late ’70’s in particular.
Guitarist and vocalist Ivano Bonfanti came to London from Milan with just a suitcase and a Rickenbacker guitar in the early 1990’s, within a year he joined The Direction, a hard gigging mod revival band who he’d been following as a fan.
Len Fleckney has played drums with many bands over the years, most notably with legendary mod revival group Long Tall Shorty and previously Eleanor Rigby (also Canadian band The Crescent Heights).
Jez Payne and Joe Duggan make up the rest of Proper, on bass and guitar respectively.
Proper’s debut gig was at the iconic 100 Club, supporting The Scene and they’ve since gone on to build up a loyal live following and have taken their sound further afield.
Having worked alongside legendary sound engineer Pat Collier, and Tony Morrison (Long Tall Shorty), their debut album was released in 2017.
Back with Pat Collier, this time with Brett ‘Buddy’ Ascott (The Chords, The Fallen Leaves, etc) on producer duties, Proper locked themselves in Perry Vale Studios until they made eleven sure fire power popped hits, now collected on this very album.
Limited to 300 copies on vinyl (also on CD).
Line Up:
Ivano Bonfanti- Vocals, Guitars
Joseph Duggan – Guitar
Jeremy Payne – Bass
Len Fleckney – Drums, Vocals.

BREAKING NEWS: The Threads announce appearance at the IPO Festival at The Cavern, Liverpoool, on Sunday 25th May
The Countdown Records Story 1985-88 - vinly LP out on 9th May
The Countdown Records Story 1985-88
Acid Jazz presents a very special
compilation marking the 40th Anniversary of group label Countdown Records.
Vinyl LP out 9 May
Countdown was
originally founded by Eddie Piller, Maxine Conroy and Terry Rawlings and
distributed by legendary UK independent Stiff Records. The label reflected the
burgeoning Mod revival scene of the mid ‘80s, alongside a vibrant New Wave
sound, as Ed began to find his way as a label executive.
It was a fresh and
unique take on Mod that attempted to place the scene’s main acts in the
mainstream world. It almost worked too. But despite the brilliance of the
signings, it was tripped up by the demise of Stiff, and the corporate
domination of the mid-80s charts.
Lessons would be
learned and applied with Piller’s next label Acid Jazz, where Countdown
refugees such as James Taylor, and Mother Earth’s Chris White went on to
greater success.
This collection
tells the label’s story through the best of its musical output, from mainstays
such as Makin’ Time, The Prisoners and The Kick, alongside classics and
rarities from their groundbreaking compilations, from which this release in
turn takes inspiration.
Presented in a
beautiful sleeve layout with a classy Modernist touch, the compilation also
coincides with a new book that further explores the Countdown legacy from Mod
and beyond.
