Paul Weller helps raise £8,000 for Woking hospice

Lovers of The Jam turned out for a night dedicated to the Woking band

The sounds of The Jam rocked the room at a gig which raised more than £8,000 for Woking and Sam Beare Hospice and Wellbeing Care. The gig took place at the Fiery Bird live music venue in Woking, which is just 50 yards away from where The Jam played 50 years ago.

Organised by hospice supporter Sam Molnar, guests listened to Steve 'Tufty' Carver as he recounted tales of The Jam, who he says were the best band in the world. Steve was interviewed on stage by Dan Jennings, the host of the Paul Weller Fan Podcast series.

Cian Downing, a singer, songwriter and guitarist, played a brilliant set list featuring his own songs and some covers while The Jam’d, the headliners for the night, got the crowds going with all The Jam hits. Their set on Saturday, March 22 also included a touching tribute to The Jam’s Rick Buckler, who died in February.

Samantha Wakefield, the hospice’s marketing manager and her team made up of Lucy Smith, Anji Molnar and Sandie Robertson, had been busy behind the scenes organising the event, running two raffles and an auction to add to the funds raised for the hospice. A guitar signed by Paul Weller and decorated with artwork by Simon Clements reached in an impressive £750 in the auction.

Sam said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported the gig. If they came along, bought a raffle ticket or donated a prize, it all counts.

"I’m very grateful to Warren Macfarlane from D.R.C. Shipping for sponsoring the night and to Steve Wheatley from This is Now design for designing the merchandise. Thanks to the Fiery Bird staff for making sure the evening ran smoothly and to the hospice staff for spreading the word about the hospice’s work.

“There was a lot of love in the room on Saturday and it just shows what the hospice means to the town. We are lucky that they support so many families across the area.”
