New Untouchables started the Brighton Mod Weekender back in 2004, the event continues to grow and now takes place over 4 days August bank holiday.

Tickets are on sale NOW for our main evening events held at Brighton’s best venue, the Komedia situated just a few doors down from Brighton’ smartest shop Jump The Gun.

The Komedia has two rooms with a huge wooden dancefloor, air conditioning and two well priced bars with great service and friendly staff.

Gerry and the Pacemakers singer, Gerry Marsden, has died at the age of 78.

Gerry and the Pacemakers singer Gerry Marsden, whose version of You'll Never Walk Alone became a football terrace anthem for his hometown club of Liverpool, has died at the age of 78.

His family said he died on Sunday after a short illness not linked to Covid-19.

Marsden's band was one of the biggest success stories of the Merseybeat era, and in 1963 became the first to have their first three songs top the chart.

The band's other best known hit, Ferry Cross The Mersey, came in 1964.

It was written by Marsden himself as a tribute to his city, and reached number eight.

Marsden was made an MBE in 2003 for services to charity after supporting victims of the Hillsborough disaster.

At the time, he said he was "over the moon" to have received the honour, following his support for numerous charities across Merseyside and beyond.

Gerry and the Pacemakers worked the same Liverpool club circuit as The Beatles in the 1960s and were signed by the Fab Four's manager Brian Epstein.

Epstein gave Marsden's group the song How Do You Do It, which had been turned down by The Beatles and Adam Faith, for their debut single.

Sir Paul McCartney described Gerry and the Pacemakers as The Beatles's "biggest rivals" on the Merseyside scene.

"I'll always remember you with a smile," Sir Paul said in his tribute to Marsden.

And the other surviving Beatle, Sir Ringo Starr, sent "peace and love" to Marsden's family in a tribute on Twitter.

While Marsden was a songwriter as well as a singer, his most enduring hit was actually a cover of a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical number from 1945, which he had to convince his bandmates to record as their third single.

In many interviews over the years, he explained how fate played a part in his band ever recording the song. He was watching a Laurel and Hardy movie at Liverpool's Odeon cinema in the early 1960s and, only because it was raining, he decided to stay for the second part of a double feature.

That turned out to be the film Carousel - which featured that song on its soundtrack - and Marsden was so moved by the lyrics that he became determined that it should become part of his band's repertoire.

'Ronnie's: The life of Ronnie Scott and his world famous jazz club' documentary

 

PHK Review: I had recorded this from BBC4 pre-Christmas and finally found an opportunity to watch this excellent documentary last night.

Focusing on Ronnie Scott and his lifelong collaboration with Pete King, this tells the Modern Jazz story of two talented musicians who put their love of their art before financial gains, almost having to close the club on several occasions due to the money running out.

Beautifully told, some fabulous footage (including THAT drum solo by Buddy Rich) and fantastic contributions from some of the greats from the Modern Jazz scene. Plus some great and unique stories such as Jimi Hendrix guesting at the club the night before he died.

The documentary concludes with the sale of Ronnie Scott's' after his death and how this fantastic and seminal venue has been maintained.

If you're a fan of Modern Jazz, and the UK scene in particular, then this is a documentary for you.

SYNOPSIS:

In 1959, saxophonist Ronnie Scott opened the door to a small basement club in London’s Soho. As part of the burgeoning modern jazz movement, he and fellow saxophonist Pete King had dreamt of opening a club modelled on the swinging scene of New York’s 52nd Street. From its humble beginnings sixty years ago, Ronnie Scott’s would become the cornerstone of the UK jazz scene and one of the most famous jazz clubs in the world.

Ronnie Scott was beloved by many, from the great and famous who frequented his club, to the many hard up musicians who were often helped by his warmth and generous spirit. However, Ronnie was as complex and colourful as the music played on his stage. In private Ronnie battled with depression and when his untimely death occurred in 1996 it left the jazz community bereft of a respected and favourite leader.
