Paul Weller and Johnny Marr perform Johnny Walker & The Allstars cover in London


Paul Weller teamed up with Johnny Marr last night at London's Royal Albert Hall for a cover of Junior Walker & The Allstars' '(I'm A) Roadrunner'.

The pair performed the 1966 hit together as part of the Teenage Cancer Trust concerts.

Introducing the former Smiths guitarist, Weller said: "Would you please welcome back to the stage Johnny Marr. This will be either be fucking great or a disaster."

The show also saw Weller showcase a series of new songs from his forthcoming album, including title track 'Saturn's Pattern', 'Long Time', I'm Where I Should Be' and 'These City Streets'.

The singer kicked off the show with new track 'White Sky', but as soon as the track finished, he stormed off.

"I have got a big fucking technical problem, so you'll have to excuse me,” he told the crowd before he walked offstage.

Weller eventually came back on after a couple of minutes and said: "Shame that such an auspicious start too. We shall continue."

He went on to play a two hour set with his five-piece band, which included long-time touring guitarist from Ocean Colour Scene, Steve Cradock, performing an eclectic set from his back-catalogue.

The show also featured a handful of tracks from his 1995 album 'Stanley Road', including an extended version of 'Porcelain Gods', 'You Do Something To Me' 'Whirlpools' End', 'Broken Stones' and 'I'm A Changing Man'.

Earlier, Johnny Marr played a rousing support slot which featured a cover of The Clash's 'I Fought The Law'.

He laced his set with tracks from his two solo albums, Electronic track 'Getting Away With It', plus hits from The Smiths including 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out', 'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before' and 'How Soon Is Now'.

Closing the show with the latter, Marr also criticised the organisers for cutting his set short before highlighting the good causes of the Teenage Cancer Trust concerts.

He added: "Watch out for the electrics. They're dodgy. I know when they're pulling the plug on me. This has been for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Thank you very much."
