Kenney Jones to play 229 The Venue, London, on Friday 03 December
As the drummer with Small
Faces, Faces and The Who, Kenney Jones has been at
the heart of three biggest bands ever to have come out of the UK. In 1965 when
Jones was 16 he had his first hit record when he shot to fame with Small
Faces, who were at the heart of the Mod revolution which swept Britain at
the time, and a band who have been cited as a major influence on musicians
during the 40 years which have followed.
When Small Faces split
Kenney was instrumental in forming Faces and invited Rod
Stewart to feature as lead singer in a line-up which also included Ronnie
Wood, Ian McLagan, and Ronnie Lane. The Faces split
in the mid-70’s and Kenney along with Steve Marriott, Ian McLagan and
new man, Rick Wills, re-formed Small Faces, touring for
a couple of years and making two albums before deciding to call it a day. By
this time Kenney was recognised as one of the top drummers in the rock
industry, and it was no surprise that he was The Who’s choice to
replace Keith Moon after his tragic death in 1978. Once again
Kenney found himself part of a hugely successful band as The Who toured
the world and recorded new albums, Face Dances and It’s
Hard. After leaving The Who, Kenney hooked up with former Bad
Company singer, Paul Rodgers to form The Law in
the early 1990’s, releasing a critically acclaimed eponymously titled album.
Although Small Faces, Faces, The Who and The Law have been the four main bands in his life, Kenney has also been much sought-after during his career and has performed with some of the biggest names around. He has recoded a single of his own called Ready or Not, and has appeared on many albums including those by The Rolling Stones, Andy Fairweather Low, Joan Armatrading, Marsha Hunt, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Wings.

FLAT 19 - Perfect Girl EP (PICTURE DISC) 7"
Well here it is, the wait
is over and we can now reveal the THIRTEENTH Picture Disc in this very
collectable '79 Classic Mod series.
Hailing
from South London, Flat 19 were formed in the spring of 1980 when old pals
Steve and Gordon found Barry through an ad in a music paper and Andy was a mate
of Gordon’s older brother.
So the
band was formed with Steve Bartlett on Vocals & Guitar, Gordon Watson on
Vocals & Guitar, Barry Frost on Bass and Andy Hunter on Drums.
All four
of them had a love of all things Beatles, Stones, Mod and the Sixties. They
named themselves after an, at that point an unreleased Merton Parkas song as
they were their local band and they were all fans.
Their
first live performance took place at a school friend’s wedding in late1980 but
their first proper gig took place at The Castle pub in Tooting in Feb 1981
supporting Andy’s brother’s band “Hit and Run” who were very popular at the
time playing RnB that was very similar to Nine Below Zero.
They
played regular gigs at The Castle in Tooting (and became their house band as
Andy was now DJing there too) and Kings Head in Fulham and in no time they had
built up a hard-core following of fans as they mixed their set up with some
classy original tracks along with the trusty covers one of which was “Run Run
Run” by the Who which they always closed their set with, accompanied with
plenty of feedback along with an manic strobe lighting show! The Crowed loved
this and it always went down a storm!
On
Saturday 30th May 1981, they ventured into ‘Wave Studios” in
Twickenham to lay down these three tracks. This was actually 40 Years ago and
has stayed unreleased to now!!!!
During
their three year existence they played a lot of gigs, sometimes up to 4 in one
week. The biggest gig that the band got to play was supporting The Purple
Hearts in Ilford.
When Andy
and Barry left for reasons no one can remember, Simon Smith of The Merton
Parkas and Andy’s Brother Phil filled in until permanent replacements could be
found and then a young Steve White took over the drums and Mick Martin was
drafted in on Bass. This line-up did one gig supporting The Truth at the
Marquee. They were offered more gigs, but decided to call it a day as it wasn’t
the same in the summer of 1982.

The Times 6-CD Box Set - My Picture Gallery – The Artpop! Recordings (Cherry Red)
Six CD box set containing the complete recordings released between 1981 and 1986 by Edward Ball’s indie mod band The Times including their albums Go! With The Times (recorded 1980 but released in 1985), Pop Goes Art! (1982), This Is London (1983), Hello Europe (1984), Up Against It (1986) and Enjoy (1986).
Also includes The Times’ rare 1981 debut single ‘Red With Purple Flashes’ / ‘Biff! Bang! Pow!’ which has sold for over £300 on Discogs and was named as one of the top five mod revival singles in Mojo magazine.
Bonus tracks include The Times’ legendary take on the ‘Theme From Dangerman’, a cover of
David Bowie’s ‘London Boys’, tracks from the 12” EPs ‘I Helped Patrick McGoohan Escape’ (1983), ‘Blue Period’ (1985), ‘Boys About Town’ (1986) and ‘Times TV’ (1986) and an alternative version of perhaps their most famous song ‘I Helped Patrick McGoohan Escape’ (inspired by cult TV series The Prisoner) taken from the ‘A Splash Of Colour’ compilation that celebrated the early 1980s psychedelic revival.
Edward Ball was a member of cult band The Television Personalities alongside his school friend Dan Treacy before leaving to concentrate on The Times. Treacy plays guitar on the Pop Goes Art! album which was originally released on Dan and Ed’s Whaam! Records before being reissued on Edward’s Artpop! label.
The Whaam! label set up by Edward Ball with the Television Personalities’ Dan Treacy and Ball’s own Artpop! Label were a direct inspiration for Alan McGee to set up Creation Records who signed Edward Ball in 1988. McGee was a fan of The Times and the ‘Pop Goes Art!’ and ‘This Is London’ albums and they inspired his own band Biff Bang Pow! and Creation Records.
The 1986 album Up Against It is the soundtrack to Joe Orton’s rejected screenplay for The Beatles that was staged by Edward Ball and Mood Six’s Tony Conway at a West London theatre. Edward Ball has approved the box set and has contributed notes alongside MOJO and Record Collector writer Lois Wilson.
The albums This Is London, Hello Europe and Enjoy make up the ‘Frank Summit’ trilogy, an ambitious work with the scope of Tommy or Quadrophenia that foretells Brexit and the rise of right wing leaders such as Donald Trump.

Roger Daltrey to play Symphony Hall, Birmingham, on Sunday 7th November
A special evening of Who classics, rarities, solo hits and fan Q&A.
The show, which will comprise of a unique mix of music and conversation, is built around Roger’s musical journey and encompasses nearly every style imaginable – including blues, rock, country, soul and metal.
During the evening he will dig into his incredible back catalogue pulling from his nine solo albums, album with Wilko Johnson and even reinterpreting a few Who classics and rarities.
This is a show for real music fans and will give a unique insight into how all these great songs came about; what the influences were and where the sounds originated. As with everything Roger does, it will be totally real and authentic and lots of it – a plethora of songs with some questions answered and rock n roll stories along the way – nothing phoned in!
“The truth is singers need to sing,” says Roger, “use it or lose it”.
“Throughout my life I have sung with so many great musicians, from the heavy rock of The Who and Wilko Jonson, to the Irish lilt of The Chieftains. On this tour I want to take the audience on a musical journey through my career as a singer, with a show of songs and sounds that explores and surprises. I look forward to having closer contact with my audience than festivals and arenas allow.Leaving time to chat.”
“It's important to get our road crew working again, without these guys the halls would go silent”
“It's also clear that live music is an important part of all our lives, something to free us from the groundhog days that life has become. This pandemic has brought home to me what an important part of me singing is and it's made me determined to get back onstage asap. See you soon!”
Beautiful People: The Boutique in 1960s Counterculture Exhibition from 1 October 2021 – 13 March 2022
“We were young, rich and beautiful, and the tide – we thought – was turning in our favour. We were going to change everything, of course, but mostly we were going to change the rules.” – Marianne Faithfull.
In the mid-1960s a handful of Chelsea boutiques sparked a fashion revolution. Freed and fuelled by creative exploration and experimentation, they began selling radical clothing to the counterculture youth. Their outrageously flamboyant designs were inspired by romantic ideas of the past; Byron-esque frilled shirts were paired with Regency brocades and plush velvet trousers were mixed with influences from Morocco and the Far East. They blurred gender boundaries with increasingly androgynous styles, creating an explosion of colour, pattern and decoration.
Beautiful People explores fabulous and rare examples from these era-defining stores and designers, examining the shared free spirit of Granny Takes A Trip, Hung On You, Apple, Biba, Mr Fish, Thea Porter, Ossie Clark and more. Designs worn by the likes of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix will be displayed as part of recreations of these iconic boutiques.

Paul Weller goes from Modfather to grandfather as daughter Leah gives birth reports The Metro
Paul Weller
may be a Modfather, but he has now become a grandfather for the first time,
with his daughter Leah welcoming a baby boy.
It’s exciting
news for the 63-year-old as his 29-year-old model daughter Leah Weller-Kurata
and her husband Tomo Kurata, 31, announced the arrival of little Kouzen, who
was born on August 31.
Alongside a
snap of the tot’s teeny hands, Leah wrote on Instagram over the weekend: ‘Our
precious bubba arrived. Welcome Kouzen 31.08.21.’
The couple –
who wed in September 2018 at Goodwood House in West Sussex – announced they
were expecting their first child in June.
Alongside a
topless snap of Leah cradling her blossoming bump, with her spouse holding a
bunch of white roses over her chest and kissing her forehead, she simply wrote:
‘Mum & Dad.’
Paul – who
shares Leah with The Style Council singer Dee C. Lee – has seven other
children.
The
Changingman hitmaker also has son Nathanial with his first wife Dee, whom he
was married to from 1988 until they divorced in 1994, as well as daughter
Jesamine and son Stevie Mac with ex-partner Samantha Stock.
Paul also has
a son called Dylan – named after the music legend Bob Dylan – from a
relationship he had with a make-up stylist, as well as twin
sons John-Paul and Bowie and daughter Nova, who was born in 2017, whom he has
with second wife Hannah Andrews.
The former
Jam star recently insisted he’s done adding to his brood as he opened up on
fatherhood in his 60s.
He told The
Mirror: ‘I think eight’s a good number. It’s my lucky number.
‘But the difference between being 30 and being a dad and being 60 and being a dad is a different mindset.

Jam frontman will release new physical editions of both records on October 15
via Craft Recordings.
Originally

around Europe.
‘Illumination’
(2002) marked Weller’s sixth solo studio album, which features the singles
‘It’s Written in the Stars’ and ‘Leafy Mysteries’. The collection also boasts
guest appearances from Noel Gallagher, Kelly Jones of Stereophonics, and
Carleen Anderson.
Cut at
Metropolis Studios in London, the forthcoming reissues include faithful

Paul Weller

four-star review, NME wrote: “…For the second time in less than a year he’s
released a record that can sit safely among the best of his long career.
Weller’s current purple patch is growing ever more potent.”
Weller
suggested surely after the record’s release that he was unsure whether he would
release another album, adding that it “hard to say at the moment”.
“I often think that after I finish an album – there’s so much more involved in making/putting out albums these days,” Weller explained.

THIS IS LONDON / SMALL FLAT BY THE SEA 7" VINYL - CHANNEL 3
This collaboration combines the forces of Parisian "Pop Moderniste" style with a very English take on Mod Pop Soul to get results that should produce a rare point of agreement and delight ears from both sides of the channel.
Side One - "This is London" combines a superb melody from French Boutik's Serge Hoffman, with lyrics decrying the gentrification of London from East End native son Bobby Tarlton (Dr Bird), featuring a melancholic flute, groovy organ, and a dance floor perfect rhythm provided by Brian Gosling on drums.
Side Two - "Small Flat by the Sea" sees French Boutik's Franco American singer Gabriela Giacoman providing her hallmark vocals for a beautifully fresh and simple take on Bobby's original song, a Dr Bird favourite, originally released in 2018, once again ably assisted by Serge and Brian.

SECRET AFFAIR Let Your Heart Dance BLUE VINYL
The second in the line
for official, fully licensed SECRET AFFAIR reissues is their follow-up to
"Time For Action".
"Let Your Heart
Dance", with it's tribal drum intro, leading to the horns and Ian Page's
impassioned plea came out in late 1979 and reached #33 in the UK charts,
prompting another Top Of The Pops appearance.
More dancey than its
predecessor: "I felt
Time for Action got people punching the air, but I didn't feel that it was a
song to dance to,” said Ian Page.
“Let Your Heart Dance is a dance anthem with lots of horns, but with the room for Dave [Cairns] to do that extraordinary thing he does with the guitar over the top. It was a fantastic opportunity to test a studio to its limits; there are about three drum kits on it".
Re-released on blue coloured vinyl, keep the set going - "My World" is next!
In The Crowd 40th Anniversary Edition - Derek D'Souza
