Roger Daltrey to play Symphony Hall, Birmingham, on Sunday 7th November

 

A special evening of Who classics, rarities, solo hits and fan Q&A.

The show, which will comprise of a unique mix of music and conversation, is built around Roger’s musical journey and encompasses nearly every style imaginable – including blues, rock, country, soul and metal.

During the evening he will dig into his incredible back catalogue pulling from his nine solo albums, album with Wilko Johnson and even reinterpreting a few Who classics and rarities.

This is a show for real music fans and will give a unique insight into how all these great songs came about; what the influences were and where the sounds originated. As with everything Roger does, it will be totally real and authentic and lots of it – a plethora of songs with some questions answered and rock n roll stories along the way – nothing phoned in!

“Throughout my life I have sung with so many great musicians, from the heavy rock of The Who and Wilko Jonson, to the Irish lilt of The Chieftains. Beautiful People: The Boutique in 1960s Counterculture Exhibition from 1 October 2021 – 13 March 2022

 

“We were young, rich and beautiful, and the tide – we thought – was turning in our favour. We were going to change everything, of course, but mostly we were going to change the rules.” – Marianne Faithfull.

In the mid-1960s a handful of Chelsea boutiques sparked a fashion revolution. Freed and fuelled by creative exploration and experimentation, they began selling radical clothing to the counterculture youth. Their outrageously flamboyant designs were inspired by romantic ideas of the past; Byron-esque frilled shirts were paired with Regency brocades and plush velvet trousers were mixed with influences from Morocco and the Far East. They blurred gender boundaries with increasingly androgynous styles, creating an explosion of colour, pattern and decoration.

Beautiful People explores fabulous and rare examples from these era-defining stores and designers, examining the shared free spirit of Granny Takes A Trip, Hung On You, Apple, Biba, Mr Fish, Thea Porter, Ossie Clark and more. Designs worn by the likes of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix will be displayed as part of recreations of these iconic boutiques.

Paul Weller goes from Modfather to grandfather as daughter Leah gives birth reports The Metro

 

Paul Weller may be a Modfather, but he has now become a grandfather for the first time, with his daughter Leah welcoming a baby boy.

It’s exciting news for the 63-year-old as his 29-year-old model daughter Leah Weller-Kurata and her husband Tomo Kurata, 31, announced the arrival of little Kouzen, who was born on August 31.

Alongside a snap of the tot’s teeny hands, Leah wrote on Instagram over the weekend: ‘Our precious bubba arrived. Welcome Kouzen 31.08.21.’

The couple – who wed in September 2018 at Goodwood House in West Sussex – announced they were expecting their first child in June.

Alongside a topless snap of Leah cradling her blossoming bump, with her spouse holding a bunch of white roses over her chest and kissing her forehead, she simply wrote: ‘Mum & Dad.’

Paul – who shares Leah with The Style Council singer Dee C. Lee – has seven other children.

The Changingman hitmaker also has son Nathanial with his first wife Dee, whom he was married to from 1988 until they divorced in 1994, as well as daughter Jesamine and son Stevie Mac with ex-partner Samantha Stock.

Paul also has a son called Dylan – named after the music legend Bob Dylan – from a relationship he had with a make-up stylist, as well as ​twin sons John-Paul and Bowie and daughter Nova, who was born in 2017, whom he has with second wife Hannah Andrews.

The former Jam star recently insisted he’s done adding to his brood as he opened up on fatherhood in his 60s.

He told The Mirror: ‘I think eight’s a good number. It’s my lucky number.

‘But the difference between being 30 and being a dad and being 60 and being a dad is a different mindset.

Paul Weller to reissue ‘Days Of Speed’ and ‘Illumination’ on vinyl for first time

 

Paul Weller has announced the first vinyl reissues of his classic albums ‘Days Of Speed’ and ‘Illumination’.

The former Jam frontman will release new physical editions of both records on October 15 via Craft Recordings.

Originally released back in 2001, ‘Days Of Speed’ is an acoustic double live record comprising songs that were performed live solo and acoustic at various venues around Europe.

‘Illumination’ (2002) marked Weller’s sixth solo studio album, which features the singles ‘It’s Written in the Stars’ and ‘Leafy Mysteries’. The collection also boasts guest appearances from Noel Gallagher, Kelly Jones of Stereophonics, and Carleen Anderson.

Cut at Metropolis Studios in London, the forthcoming reissues include faithful original packaging replication. ‘Days of Speed’ has a gatefold jacket, printed inner sleeves and a one-page insert, while ‘Illumination’ has a gatefold jacket, printed inner sleeve and a 16-page booklet.

Paul Weller released his most recent studio effort, ‘Fat Pop (Volume 1), back in May. In a four-star review, NME wrote: “…For the second time in less than a year he’s released a record that can sit safely among the best of his long career. Weller’s current purple patch is growing ever more potent.”

Weller suggested surely after the record’s release that he was unsure whether he would release another album, adding that it “hard to say at the moment”.

“I often think that after I finish an album – there’s so much more involved in making/putting out albums these days,” Weller explained.

This collaboration combines the forces of Parisian "Pop Moderniste" style with a very English take on Mod Pop Soul to get results that should produce a rare point of agreement and delight ears from both sides of the channel. 

Side One -  "This is London" combines a superb melody from French Boutik's Serge Hoffman, with lyrics decrying the gentrification of London from East End native son Bobby Tarlton (Dr Bird), featuring a melancholic flute, groovy organ, and a dance floor perfect rhythm provided by Brian Gosling on drums. 

Side Two - "Small Flat by the Sea" sees French Boutik's Franco American singer Gabriela Giacoman providing her hallmark vocals for a beautifully fresh and simple take on Bobby's original song, a Dr Bird favourite, originally released in 2018, once again ably assisted by Serge and Brian.

SECRET AFFAIR Let Your Heart Dance BLUE VINYL

 

The second in the line for official, fully licensed SECRET AFFAIR reissues is their follow-up to "Time For Action".

"Let Your Heart Dance", with it's tribal drum intro, leading to the horns and Ian Page's impassioned plea came out in late 1979 and reached #33 in the UK charts, prompting another Top Of The Pops appearance.

More dancey than its predecessor: "I felt Time for Action got people punching the air, but I didn't feel that it was a song to dance to,” said Ian Page.

“Let Your Heart Dance is a dance anthem with lots of horns, but with the room for Dave [Cairns] to do that extraordinary thing he does with the guitar over the top. It was a fantastic opportunity to test a studio to its limits; there are about three drum kits on it".

Re-released on blue coloured vinyl, keep the set going - "My World" is next!

In The Crowd 40th Anniversary Edition - Derek D'Souza

 

Derek says, "It gives me great pleasure to announce the release of a 40th anniversary edition ‘In The Crowd’, with many new and unseen pictures of the band.

It seemed right to announce today as it was on this date in 1981, I shot The Jam for the Absolute Beginners sleeve, in Chiswick Park.

My book has been out of print for some time and I wanted to reappraise it.

I’m really excited to be working with the team behind the acclaimed publication ‘Soul Deep - Adventures With The Style Council’. Together we will produce a fantastic book for Jam fans across the world.

The limited edition hardback will be released in early 2022.
