March Modness at Waterbeach, Cambridge, on Sunday 10th March in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust

Written by MIKE SCIALOM

“Mods and scooterists are heading to Waterbeach on Sunday to take part in a national fund-raising campaign for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Lambretta and Vespa Scooter riders will meet up at the Beach Club, Waterbeach at 12 noon and leave at 1pm to “do a tour of the surrounding villages”, says Cambridge Scooter Club’s Paula Rae.

The March of the Mods – Cambridgeshire meet is one of 17 Mod-themed events across the UK organised by Julie Chester at Beach Social Club and coordinated with Cambridge Scooter Club to produce 12 hours of March Mod-ness.

Every pound raised is matched by Barclays, doubling participants’ fundraising efforts and, with Cambridge Alley Club DJs working alongside, the organisers are confident the event will become an annual success.

Four live bands support March of the Mods in Cambridge and they’re doing it for free.

“Thank you to Green Jam, Five5ka, The Loop & Heavy Sol Band. Cambridge Alley Club DJ’s, Rev Nix & Sawty, who will be playing a mix of music celebrating all things Mod – from 1960 to the present day,” comments Paula.

Julie Chester, organising the Cambridge leg, said: “We have been overwhelmed with the support for this event, the bands, DJ’s, CSC, Jester Productions, Eclipse Sound & Lighting and Marshall Amps are all providing their expertise for free to ensure that we have a fantastic event.”

“We are expecting a large number of Scooterists and Mods from Cambridge and surrounding areas to join us for the ride out around local villages,” adds Paula. “The Beach Club has agreed to open its doors to the public between 12 and 3pm on Sunday, serving pie, and mash plus liquor and light refreshments.”

All details are on CSC website www.cambridges cooterclub.org.uk or people can contact Paula on 07742 321263 for details.

Members of the public are also being invited to help raise funds by entering a secret bid for Silent Auction, a limited edition print signed by artist Horace Panter, bass player with The Specials.
