Paul Weller announces show at The 100 Club, London, for 20th May

Paul Weller, who releases his second best of collection 'More Modern Classics' on June 2, will play the venue on Oxford Street on May 20. The show is in addition to the two existing tiny shows he's announced for London's Bush Hall and Dingwalls, on May 19 and 21 respectively.

Speaking to Jon Holmes on XFM's Breakfast Show, Weller said the gigs are acting as unofficial launch parties for 'More Modern Classics', but the main reason was that he and the rest of his band "just fancied doing it".

"That's a good enough reason, isn't it?" he added, before praising the 100 Club. "It's like a place that's been frozen in time, but in a good way, in a nice way. But you do get a sense of history. So many different people have played there over the decades. It's in the walls and the décor."

Weller went on to talk of new material he's working on, saying he won't have chance to finish it until September or October this year, with a Spring 2015 release likely. The album will be Weller's 12th, the follow-up to 2012's 'Sonik Kicks'.

Weller also discussed playing drums for Damon Albarn and Noel Gallagher at last year's Teenage Cancer Trust show at the Royal Albert Hall. The gig saw the former Blur and Oasis sparring partners united onstage for the first time, roping in Weller to join them. He said he would only "very loosely" use the term "play the drums", but added: "I think there was a definite sense of history in the making there. It was nice to be sitting at the back watching it."
