Pub to bring Northern Soul to Stourbridge reports Dan Sharp in the Stourbridge News

NORTHERN Soul is back to reclaim its heyday with a special night at a Stourbridge pub.

Karl Parke, who runs The Swan, in Hagley Road, is introducing the nights after claiming that type of music and dancing is becoming popular once again.

For thousands of youngsters in the 1970s (PHK: and the 1960s!), Northern Soul was a secret pleasure, with fans making their dance moves in the weekly all-nighters at venues across the country including Wigan Casino.

Karl said: “I used to go to Wigan Casino myself many years ago, and I’ve always hoped it would come back into style.

“Over the past few months, I’ve asked my DJ to slip in some northern soul records during his weekly dance spot and they always go down a storm. Even with people who’ve never heard of it.

“So I thought why not actually make a night of it?”

The first Northern Soul night at The Swan is taking place on Thursday (February 19), and will feature the sounds of Fontella Bass, Esther Philips, Toby Legend and Little Sonny.

Karl added: “It’s not an all-nighter but if it’s as popular, as I think it will be, we’ll definitely be doing it again.”
