Brookes,
former guitarist with The Jam, kept the audience enthralled during his Woking
Hospice gig on Saturday at the HG Wells Conference & Events Centre,
performing songs intertwined with his memories of the formation of the
legendary band.
Scribblings
of songs written in lined exercise books were projected onto a screen on stage,
along with rarely seen photos of The Jam and even their first business card.
Fans
listened to old recordings of Weller singing hits including Elvis Presley’s
Blue Suede Shoes and Neil Sedaka's Oh! Carol.
Whispered
rumours among the seated audience confirmed Weller was in the house and the
fans went wild when he walked out from behind display boards by the stage.
He
joined his friend for three duets, including their take on How Sweet It Is (To
Be Loved By You), first recorded by Motown legend Marvin Gaye.
It was a
unique night for the audience, some who had travelled many miles to see Brookes
perform.
Andy
Stuart took a trip from Doncaster to Woking for the one-off gig and said he was
thrilled to see Weller and Brookes on stage together.
He told
Get Surrey: “It is history in the making with the recordings we haven’t heard
before.”
Weller
signed a picture by James Cowboymod, which was auctioned for Woking Hospice and
won by David Lees from Cheshire, who paid £375 for the one-off item.
Support
acts on the night were The Lost Boys and Return Of Thanks.
A grand
total of nearly £4,000 was collected at the gig, which was organised by Vic
Falsetta.
In 2010,
Weller raised more than £60,000 for Woking Hospice in his hometown thanks to a
Wake Up Woking gig arranged by Sam Molnar and Falsetta at Woking Leisure
Centre.
Last
month he performed at G Live in Guildford, where his gig was the fastest
selling since the venue opened two years ago.
