Northern Soul fans will pay tribute to a popular stalwart of the scene tomorrow night with a special event.
Paul ‘Waxy’ Johnston (pictured) died suddenly at the age of 60 recently, from a brain haemorrhage.
One of the original soul boys, he was well-known at local soul venues.
Friends are being urged to join a celebration of his life at The Ashley Club,Victoria Road East,Thornton, from 8pm.
DJs Jimmy Scrivener, Rod Allsworth, Glenn Walker-Foster, Tim Rabjohn, Mick Ellis and Dave Rostron are all giving their time for free.
Jimmy said: “He always had a smile on his face and loved his music. Northern Soul music is going through a revival, but Waxy was there at the beginning, going to venues like The Twisted Wheel in Manchester and Blackpool Mecca in the late 60s and early 70s.
“Waxy was also featured in the documentary The Strange World of Northern Soul, produced by ex-Blackpool Mecca DJ Ian Levine.
“Paul’s five children, Louise, Olivia, May, Lucy and Joseph were also converted to their dad’s love of soul music. “He will be sadly missed.”
Admission is free, although donations will be welcome and given to his family.
