Sir
Elton John has paid tribute to terminally ill British guitar legend Wilko
Johnson by presenting him with an award he had just received himself.
The
singer, who had been handed the Genius award at the GQ ceremony by the Dr
Feelgood musician, promptly handed it back to him declaring: "You're the
f*****g genius here."
Sir
Elton added: "He's too busy living life to think about f*****g
dying."
Speaking
later, Johnson, who has cancer of the pancreas and has chosen not to undergo
treatment, said he was "very, very touched" by the gesture.
He said:
"I didn't expect it, but I'll probably put the award on my mantelpiece
like you're supposed to."
A
founding member of the 1970s Essex band Dr Feelgood, noted for his exuberant
performances and mad-eyed stare, Johnson later went on to lead his own band and
had a stint in Ian Dury's band The Blockheads.
He has
won a new generation of fans who watch him on the TV fantasy series Game Of
Thrones, in which he appeared as silent executioner Ilyn Payne.
