Former
drummer of The Who, Kenney Jones, is hosting a charity event for prostate
cancer after being diagnosed with the disease.
Mr Jones
was diagnosed in the summer of 2013 following a routine annual health check
with his GP when a blood test revealed irregular high levels of
prostate-specific antigen - a protein produced by the prostate gland.
After an
MRI scan revealed the disease had not spread, he underwent brachytherapy –
internal radiotherapy – treatment in January.
Mr
Jones, who also played with The Faces, is now organising an open air rock
concert at his Hurtwood Park Polo Club in Ewhurst to raise money for Prostate
Cancer UK and to help raise awareness about the disease.
"Having
been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, Prostate Cancer UK has been a
huge support in my diagnosis and recovery," he said.
"I
am excited to be holding this day to not only raise money but to raise
awareness for them.
"One
in eight men are affected by prostate cancer and it is time to fight back.
"I
have a number of very talented friends on board who are set to make this day a
totally unique event."
Mr Jones
said when he found out he had prostate cancer his philosophy was, and still is,
that it is good to talk and has urged men to get themselves checked and to
speak more freely about the taboo subject.
He will
be attending a follow-up appointment in the coming weeks and is optimistic of
receiving good results.
Already
confirmed for the Rock 'n' Horsepower concert, which will also feature polo and
supercars, are Mike Rutherford from Genesis, John Lodge from the Moody Blues,
Damon Hill and Procol Harum.
More
acts and bands are expected to be named in the coming weeks for the event which
will take place on Saturday, June 14.
