Manchester
band The Electric Stars are to release a new version of the song ‘Belfast Boy’
as a tribute to footballer George Best.
The
group have teamed up with the Manchester United Foundation youth choir to
re-release Don Fardon's 1970 single for charity.
Their
new version features commentary from the striker's most memorable moments and a
new verse penned by Electric Stars frontman Jason Edge.
Northern
Ireland legend Best, who died in 2005 aged 59, played for United from 1963 to
1974. The CD comes with a keepsake sleeve-note which includes tributes from Sir
Alex Ferguson, Sir Bobby Charlton and Ryan Giggs.
All
proceeds will go to charities, including the George Best Foundation. The band
hope it will climb to the top spot in time for what would have been Best's 68th
birthday on May 22.
Jason
said: "It sounds a bit crazy, but we are now in the position where we can
get it to number one in the charts for George's birthday."
